Romanian presidential election second-round results 2025

George-Nicolae Simion, the founder of the right-wing Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), received the largest share of votes in the first round of the Romanian presidential election that took place on May 4, 2025, at nearly 41 percent. Nicușor-Daniel Dan, an independent candidate and the mayor of Bucharest, placed second. As none of the candidates received more than 50 percent of the votes, a second election round took place on May 18, 2025. However, the underdog candidate Nicușor-Daniel Dan managed to mark a historical victory in an election that had the largest voter turnout in the last 30 years - 64.72 percent or over 11.6 million Romanians. The pro-European candidate won with 53.6 percent of the votes, while the right-wing AUR candidate lost with a difference of 829 thousand votes.

The election took place half a year after the previous one, whose results were annulled over suspicions of foreign intervention.
